Canadian Solar Inc. announced that its energy storage business e-STORAGE (developed by its holding subsidiary CSI Solar Co., Ltd.) It has signed a contract with Colbun, a well-known power generation company in Chile. According to this agreement, e-STORAGE will provide a 228 MW/912 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for the Diego de Almagro Sur project located in the Atacama region of Chile.

This energy storage system will be powered by e-STORAGE’s proprietary solution SolBank 3.0, which is specifically designed for large-scale applications. This system adopts lithium iron phosphate battery technology, an active balanced battery management system and an advanced liquid cooling system to enhance performance, reliability and safety. In addition to providing energy storage technology, e-STORAGE will also offer a comprehensive solution for this project, including local project management, commissioning support and long-term maintenance services.
Jose Ignacio Escobar, the CEO of Colbun, explained: “This agreement reached with e-STORAGE makes us one of the leading companies in the Chilean energy storage market, ensuring a continuous and safe supply of renewable energy for our industrial customers.” This project, along with other battery systems we are developing in northern Chile, will complement the existing energy storage capacity of our southern reservoir. This is in line with our vision of promoting a responsible energy transition. Renewable energy must not only be sustainable, but also safe, continuous and competitive. Colin Parkin, the president of e-STORAGE, said, “We are honored to support Colbun’s grand vision of advancing Chile’s energy transition through large-scale energy storage.” The Diego de Almagro Sur Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project is an important milestone in e-STORAGE’s expansion in Latin America and consolidates our position as a key driver of Chile’s clean energy transition. This project demonstrates the crucial role of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in enhancing grid reliability, optimizing the utilization of renewable energy, and meeting industrial demands through safe and continuous power supply. With our SolBank 3.0 technology, we not only offer cutting-edge performance and security, but also strengthen our long-term commitment to the future of clean energy in Latin America.
The Diego de Almagrosur Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project is scheduled to commence construction in June 2025 and is expected to create up to 150 jobs at its peak. The project is scheduled to be put into commercial operation in December 2026. Once put into operation, this energy storage system will be able to meet the electricity demands of approximately 55,480 households. This battery energy storage system will be built in conjunction with Colbun’s existing 232-megawatt solar park in Diego de Almagro Sur. This solar park has been in operation since 2022 and currently includes a smaller 8-megawatt / 32-megawatt-hour battery energy storage facility. In addition to energy storage, the new system will also provide key grid services, such as grid formation, black start function and inertial support, which are crucial for the efficient integration of renewable energy into Chile’s national power grid. This project is expected to bring positive socio-economic impacts to the Atacama region by creating job opportunities and leveraging the local supply chain. SolBank 3.0 technology also helps reduce the environmental footprint of the project through its efficient and powerful security design, in line with Colbun’s broader sustainable development goals, while ensuring the reliability of long-term operation.
